Art-Painting 2020

My visual arts course this year will be focused on painting. I did not take art class last year but I've always had a passion for painting and I liked to play around with the colors. My kaupapa for this year will be based upon spiritual and cultural development. I've always liked to learn about my culture, the past and the future. I have so much interest in painting I feel like it would be something I can work on for an entire year. My subject matter will be focused on birds and sunset along with other patterns.

I have gone through the artists in my theme from the matrix on AKO and created my mood board here.

From here, I have decided on Giotto Di Bondone, Cai Guo-Quiang and Tony Fomison as my artist's models for 2.1.  These artists will also help me with 2.2 which also is going to be the start of my folio.

  1. I like your artist choices Jesy. They are all very dramatic actually! Giotto was very passionate about telling the stories of the bible in a way that could be understood through image only. during his time only 5% of the population could read. Cai Guo-Quiang is also very intense and its made more difficult by him being in a very repressed society. Tony Fomison battled alcoholism for most of his adult life and was deeply religious too.

The birds you work with; make sure you have a good reason for them. What birds are native to Samoa? could this be a starting point? if not native, what birds are common to Samoa? I know that frigate birds are symbollic of migration and the human population of the pacific islands, and that there is a symbollic way of depicting them in tapa - look at Fatu Feu'u who is an artist who works with traditional Samoan patterns and pre colonial storytelling. I think you will find him quite interesting. Also along with these artists, have a good look at Bill Hammond.
